Remember

Jay Samuels

Remember that day, so long ago?
It feels like yesterday, in the middle of winter
When I stepped onto the ice of the frozen pond
Ice that was too thin in the middle to support me
So that I fell into the water that was cold on the surface
But warm underneath the ice
And you pulled me out and warmed me by the warmth of your heart

Remember that day, so long ago?
Yes, you say, hesitant
And suddenly it feels like an eternity ago
Your eyes reveal nothing
They are frozen, like ice
And I know that beneath that ice the heart is warm
But no matter how hard I try
The ice is too thick for me to break through
