When he dropped a writhed white paper
heart into her hands they pooled blood,
so much blood that it seeped
over the sides of her cupped palms
leaving trails down her arms,
dripping droplets off her elbows
creating a stigma that could not
be turned away,
no matter how much
white paper, cotton sheets
or snow you might apply as a cover.
