Fifty years late

We hit the road
In a motor home
To commemorate
On the Road
Its publication
And our own birthdays

We met for coffee
At Lou’s Café
And headed out to L.A.
We drove through the plains
Drank through Quaker State
South again

Nashville
Memphis
South Beach
To wash
In the ocean
And head for Death Valley

We got to the sea
Still in one piece
And without any money
We sold the motor home
Not in great shape
So we’re hitching back

Hopping trains
Chasing pick ups
Working taverns
Pulling heists
Getting home
If we rush

  Fifty years late
