A “whoop!” dissolves
in sweeps of fog (some laughter)

Car doors slam, muffled
as if onto cotton weave

A cab weaves away
from the Mark Hopkins

races up to the top
of California Street

past the pumpkin-tinted lights
of faded Grace Cathedral

Quick, the fog as an editor
erases it off the surface
