Love Lost At Sea
Kai M. Venice
"I don't understand why you're so angry with me. What did I do?"
Byron obviously expected Kelly to give him an explanation, and she briefly toyed with the idea of telling him the truth. The fact that it wasn't anything that he had done, she was just exasperated with who he was and frustrated with herself in attempting to deal with him.
After six years of marriage, Kelly realized that she no longer loved Byron, in fact had never actually been in love with him; she had been in love with the idea of being married--to a tall, handsome, successful businessman. However, the truth of her life for the last few years had been far removed from the idyllic picture she had created in her mind. This cruise they were currently on had just been the final crack to shatter the picture completely.
It wasn't even that Kelly was having a horrible time; she just wasn't having the experience as she idealized it to be. Kelly didn't hate her husband, but she no longer wanted to be married to him. She just didn't know how to relay this information. The realization that it wasn't him, but something within or lacking in her that caused her inability to be happy in their relationship.
Kelly sighed and turned to face Byron, who was leaning with his side to the railing, studying her with expectancy clearly shown on his face like a dog waiting for table scraps. His curly blonde hair, tousled by the light breeze, and the supplication easily readable in his dark brown eyes made him seem almost desirable. In the early years of their union, Kelly had found that appealing look charming and somewhat sexy. Now it just fueled her anger even more.
Kelly opened her mouth to speak, having no idea what she was actually going to say, when a sudden gust of wind snatched the straw hat Byron had bought for her at the last of port-of-call off her head. As the hat flew beside him, Byron half-turned, putting his foot on the railing and stretching way out in an instinctive attempt to catch it. Kelly only had time to think, "How easy..." before thought turned into action. She reached out and shoved him with all of her strength. Already in a precarious position, Byron went over the side without a sound.
Suddenly nauseous and feeling like vomiting, Kelly sucked in her breath sharply. After holding onto it for as long as possible, she slowly released the air from her lungs. Gripping the railing she looked up at the cloudless, moonless nighttime sky, and smiled.
