My next door neighbor works for the Oakland Port Authority. Last week she
brought home a stray dog, a cute little thing except for the eyes, which flashed a
dull red. She told me that with a little care and good food the dog would be sweet
and loveable again. She didn't have time to find out. The next day, when she got
home for work, she found it hovering over the carcass of her cat. She had no choice,
so she took it to the vet to have it put down. When she got there, she found out that it
wasn't really a dog. It was a 40 lb. Cambodian rat that had come into Oakland on
one of the ships.
